Schopenhauer, The World as Will and Idea, Vol. 1, tr. R. B. Haldane and J. Kemp (Project Gutenberg #38427): "All willing arises from want, therefore from deficiency, and therefore from suffering. The satisfaction of a wish ends it; yet for one wish that is satisfied there remain at least ten which are denied. Further, the desire lasts long, the demands are infinite; the satisfaction is short and scantily measured out."

Schopenhauer, The Wisdom of Life, tr. T. Bailey Saunders (Project Gutenberg #10741), Chapter II "Personality, or What a Man Is": "The most general survey shows us that the two foes of human happiness are pain and boredom. We may go further, and say that in the degree in which we are fortunate enough to get away from the one, we approach the other. Life presents, in fact, a more or less violent oscillation between the two."

Schopenhauer, Studies in Pessimism, tr. T. Bailey Saunders (Project Gutenberg #10732), "On the Sufferings of the World": "Nay, from this point of view, we might well consider the proper form of address to be, not Monsieur, Sir, mein Herr, but my fellow-sufferer, Socî malorum, compagnon de miseres! This may perhaps sound strange, but it is in keeping with the facts; it puts others in a right light; and it reminds us of that which is after all the most necessary thing in life--the tolerance, patience, regard, and love of neighbor, of which everyone stands in need, and which, therefore, every man owes to his fellow." 두 스캔의 글자 인식 모두 "so entspricht" 의 so 를 fo 로 읽었는데, 옛 활자의 긴 s(ſ)를 f 로 잘못 읽은 것이라 so 로 바로잡았다.

Schopenhauer, The World as Will and Idea, Vol. 1, tr. R. B. Haldane and J. Kemp (Project Gutenberg #38427): "Therefore what goodness, love, and nobleness do for others, is always merely an alleviation of their suffering, and consequently all that can influence them to good deeds and works of love, is simply the knowledge of the suffering of others, which is directly understood from their own suffering and placed on a level with it. But it follows from this that pure love (αγαπη, caritas) is in its nature sympathy; whether the suffering it mitigates, to which every unsatisfied wish belongs, be great or small."
