모두가 그렇게 한다면
내가 따르려는 원칙을 모두가 따라도 되는지를 묻는다.
지금 하려는 일을 '이번 한 번만' 으로 두지 않고, 그 밑에 깔린 원칙으로 끌어올려 본다. 그리고 모든 사람이 그 원칙을 따르는 세상을 떠올린다. 결과가 좋을지, 내 마음에 들지를 따지는 것이 아니다 — 그런 세상이 애초에 성립할 수 있는지를 본다. 그래서 망설임이 '들킬까 봐' 에서 오는지, '나만 예외로 두고 싶어서' 에서 오는지를 갈라 세운다.

의무를 어길 때마다 우리 자신을 살펴보면, 우리는 실은 자기 준칙이 보편 법칙이 되기를 원하지 않는다는 것을 알게 된다. 그것은 우리에게 불가능하다. 오히려 그 반대가 보편 법칙으로 남기를 원한다. 다만 우리 자신을 위해, 또는 (이번 한 번만) 마음이 끌리는 쪽을 위해 거기서 예외를 만들 자유를 스스로에게 허락할 뿐이다.
