스스로 생각하기
스스로, 남의 자리에서, 그리고 앞뒤가 맞게 생각한다.
결정을 앞두고 남의 판단에 기대고 있을 때, 그 기댐이 어디서 오는지를 본다. 칸트는 스스로 생각하는 것을 첫째로 두지만, 혼자 고집하라는 뜻이 아니다. 둘째로 남의 자리에 서서 생각해 보고, 셋째로 앞뒤가 맞게 생각하라고 한다. 그래서 '남들이 뭐라 할까' 에 끌려가는 것과 '남의 자리에서 보면 어떨까' 를 따져 보는 것을 갈라 세운다. 앞의 것은 판단을 넘겨주는 일이고, 뒤의 것은 판단을 넓히는 일이다.

그 준칙들은 이렇다. 1. 스스로 생각할 것. 2. 생각 속에서 다른 모든 사람의 자리에 서 볼 것. 3. 언제나 자기 자신과 어긋나지 않게 생각할 것. 첫째는 편견 없는 사고방식의, 둘째는 넓어진 사고방식의, 셋째는 일관된 사고방식의 준칙이다.

타고난 재능이 미치는 범위나 정도가 아무리 작더라도, 다른 많은 이들을 가두어 두는 자기 판단의 주관적이고 사사로운 조건들을 넘어서서, 보편적인 관점에서 — 그 관점은 남의 관점에 서 보는 것으로만 정할 수 있다 — 자기 판단을 되돌아본다면, 그는 넓어진 사고방식을 지닌 사람이다.
