수단으로만 대하지 않기
사람을 — 나 자신까지도 — 쓸모로만 대하지 않는다.
관계에서 무언가 어긋났다고 느낄 때, 누가 누구를 무엇으로 대하고 있는지를 본다. 사람을 전혀 쓰지 말라는 것이 아니다 — 서로 돕고 기대는 일은 늘 있다. 칸트가 문제 삼는 것은 '수단으로만' 이다. 상대가 알았다면 동의할 수 없었을 방식으로 그를 내 목적에 끼워 넣고 있는지를 묻는다. 그리고 이 물음은 나에게도 돌아온다 — 나를 성과나 쓸모로만 재고 있지는 않은지.

목적의 나라에서 모든 것은 값을 지니거나 존엄을 지닌다. 값을 지닌 것은 그와 맞먹는 다른 것으로 바꿔 놓을 수 있다. 반면 모든 값을 넘어서 있어 맞바꿀 것이 없는 것, 그것이 존엄을 지닌다.
